Trump administration restrictions on Palestinian visa applicants means nearly all would be refused

The Trump administration has set strict new visa rules for Palestinian-origin travellers. Since early August, the State Department has halted nearly all non-immigrant visa applications for holders of Palestinian Authority (PA) passports. This applies to all travel purposes, including business, education, tourism, or medical visits. Even those with non-PA passports may be denied if they are suspected of links to the PA or the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO).

  • There is also a suspension of a programme that allowed injured children from Gaza to get medical treatment in the U.S.

  • Visas were denied not only to regular travellers but also to PA President Mahmoud Abbas and around 80 officials. They were meant to attend the UN General Assembly in New York.

  • The administration wants stricter vetting for national security. However, Palestinian leaders strongly oppose this. They argue it is especially concerning given the U.S.'s role as the UN host nation.

  • Under pressure, Palestinian Vice President Hussein al-Sheikh has reached out to U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio. He called the restrictions counterproductive and urged their reversal.
