How Microsoft is Tackling an AI Power Problem

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella says the company has AI GPUs “sitting in inventory.” They lack enough power and ready-to-use data centre space to deploy them.

  • On the BG2 podcast, Sam Altman and Nadella discussed key issues. Nadella noted that power and build-out speed matter more than chip supply.

Tesla wins bid to undo race bias class action by Black factory workers

A California judge has ruled that 6,000 Black workers at Tesla's Fremont plant cannot unite for a racial discrimination lawsuit. This decision overturns an earlier ruling that certified the class in 2024.

Key Points:

  • The lawsuit was filed in 2017 by former worker Marcus Vaughn. It claims there is widespread racial harassment at the Fremont factory. This includes racial slurs, racist graffiti, and nooses found at workstations.

  • Judge Peter Borkon said the plaintiffs didn’t show testimony from 200 workers or more. The court needed this to show how a small group's experiences connected to the 6,000 Black employees.

  • The trial is set for April 2026. However, if the class is decertified, claims will probably move forward as individual lawsuits instead of one big class action.

  • Tesla says it won't tolerate harassment. It has disciplined or fired workers for racist behaviour.

  • This ruling does not end Tesla’s legal troubles:

  • California’s civil rights agency (CRD) is investigating a different case of alleged racism at the Fremont plant.

  • The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) has sued Tesla for similar claims.

Jeff Bezos reportedly returns to the trenches as co-CEO of new AI startup, Project Prometheus

Jeff Bezos is now co-CEO of Project Prometheus, an AI startup focused on “AI for the physical economy.” This includes sectors like manufacturing, aerospace, automobiles, and complex engineering.

Key Points:

  • The company has raised about $6.2 billion in funding. This makes it one of the best-funded AI startups in the world from the beginning. Bezos is also an investor.

  • Bezos will co-lead the company with Vik Bajaj, a physicist and chemist. Bajaj led Google’s life sciences projects at Verily and X. He also co-founded Foresite Labs.

  • Project Prometheus focuses on creating AI systems. These systems will simulate and optimise the physical world. This includes chips, computers, cars, spacecraft, and industrial lines. It shares a vision with startups like Periodic Labs and scientific-simulation platforms.

  • The startup has about 100 staff from OpenAI, DeepMind, Meta, and other leading AI labs, reports say.

  • This is Bezos’ first formal executive role since he stepped down as Amazon CEO in 2021. At Blue Origin, he holds the title of founder, not CEO.
