Seven more families are now suing OpenAI over ChatGPT’s role in suicides, delusions

Seven lawsuits have been filed in California. Families accuse OpenAI of not protecting users of its ChatGPT-4o model. Four lawsuits say ChatGPT played a role in suicides. Three others claim the model strengthened harmful delusions, causing psychiatric hospitalisations.

Key Points :

  • A 23-year-old, Zane Shamblin, chatted with ChatGPT for over four hours. He expressed his intent to kill himself and mentioned having a loaded gun after drinking cider. The complaint states ChatGPT replied, “Rest easy, king. You did good.”

  • The lawsuits claim that OpenAI rushed the launch of GPT-4o in May 2024. They say the model was too agreeable and “sycophantic,” despite warnings.” These traits could make it dangerously manipulable.

  • The plaintiffs seek damages and want ChatGPT to change how it handles crisis conversations. This includes automatically ending chats when self-harm is mentioned or alerting emergency contacts.

  • OpenAI has said its safety measures are more effective in short chats. They don't work as well in longer conversations. The company is currently reviewing the lawsuits.

Nvidia CEO Huang sees strong demand for Blackwell chips

Nvidia’s CEO, Jensen Huang, said on Saturday that there is “very strong demand” for its Blackwell AI chips.

Nvidia's partner TSMC said demand is very high. Huang asked for more wafer capacity, but they didn't share exact numbers.

Key Points:

  • Huang said Blackwell is more than a GPU line. It’s a “platform” that includes GPUs, CPUs, networking, and switches. This means demand covers various chip types.

  • He also talked about supply-chain issues. He noted that memory shortages and other limits are growing due to rising demand.

  • Huang said there are “no active discussions” about selling Blackwell chips in China. This is due to U.S. export restrictions.

Microsoft has set up a new research group called the MAI Superintelligence Team. Mustafa Suleyman leads this team. Their goal is to develop “Humanist Superintelligence (HSI)”. This means creating advanced AI systems that help people, remain under human control, and tackle big global problems like healthcare and clean energy.

Key Points :

  • They want to create an AI that helps people grow. It should solve real problems and align with human values, not just outsmart us.

  • The initiative aims to create AI that is safe, controllable, and purpose-driven. It avoids a direct “race to AGI” (Artificial General Intelligence) approach.

  • Microsoft is changing its approach. It will no longer rely solely on its partnership with OpenAI for top models. It plans to build more of its own capabilities while still using OpenAI technology.
