Anthropic’s Pentagon deal is a cautionary tale for startups chasing federal contracts

The Pentagon sought access to Anthropic’s AI models for “all lawful purposes.”

Anthropic refused two uses:

Mass surveillance of citizens

Fully autonomous weapons without human control

Negotiations fell apart. The Pentagon then labelled Anthropic a “supply-chain risk,” blocking its defence contracts. After that, the Pentagon turned to OpenAI for an AI partnership.
