Top OpenAI, Google Brain researchers set off a $300M VC frenzy for their startup Periodic Labs

Periodic Labs was co-founded by Liam Fedus, who worked at OpenAI, and Ekin Dogus Cubuk, who was at Google Brain.
They raised $300 million in a seed round led by Felicis Ventures.
✅ Key points :
Their goal is to use AI, simulations, and robotics, like wet labs and material synthesis. They want to speed up scientific discovery. This is important in material science, especially for new superconductors.
They believe recent advances make this the “right time.” Robotic arms help with powder synthesis. Accurate simulations and LLMs with reasoning skills back up their claim.
They've hired top talent, built a lab, and are running experiments and simulations. However, they mention that the robotics aspect is still in its early stages.
The article warns that their goals are ambitious. However, scientific discovery is tough, unpredictable, and often takes a long time.
Amazon says AWS cloud service is back to normal after outage disrupts businesses worldwide

Amazon Web Services (AWS) experienced a major outage on Monday. This disruption affected thousands of apps and services worldwide, from London to Tokyo.
✅ Key points :
The issue was traced back to the US-EAST-1 region, one of AWS’s largest and oldest cloud areas.
AWS said the issue was due to “an underlying subsystem that checks the health of its network load balancers” in their “EC2 internal network.”
As of Monday afternoon, services have mostly resumed normal operations. AWS said some services still had message backlogs. It would take “a few hours” to clear them.
Japan makes history as Takaichi set to become the country’s first woman prime minister

On October 21, 2025, Japan’s parliament made history. They named Sanae Takaichi as the first female prime minister. This marks a historic change in Japanese politics.
Takaichi received 237 out of 465 votes in the lower house for the role.
She replaces Shigeru Ishiba after the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) lost seats. Komeito also left the government.
✅ Key points :
Her rise is backed by a new partnership between the LDP and the right-leaning Japan Innovation Party (Ishin). However, they still don't have a full parliamentary majority.
Takaichi is a conservative with strong national-defense views. She has ties to former PM Shinzo Abe. She wants to change the constitution. She aims to improve Japan-U.S. relations and get more involved in regional security.
Analysts say that, despite this gender milestone, Takaichi’s record on women’s rights and social reforms is weak.
