YouTubers sue Snap for alleged copyright infringement in training its AI models

A group of YouTube creators is suing Snap Inc., the company that owns Snapchat. They claim that Snap used their videos without permission to train AI systems. This includes the “Imagine Lens” feature. It lets users edit images using text prompts.
The plaintiffs run three channels, totalling about 6.2 million subscribers. The h3h3 YouTube channel leads, along with two smaller golf-focused channels.
Key points :
They say Snap used datasets like HD-VILA-100M to train its AI. These datasets are for academic and research use only. They aren’t for commercial AI training.
The lawsuit was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California. It seeks statutory damages and a permanent injunction to stop the alleged infringement.
Why this matters
This lawsuit isn’t isolated; it’s part of a rising wave of lawsuits from content creators and rights holders. They are targeting companies over how they collect and use material to train AI models. Other tech companies, like Nvidia, Meta, and ByteDance, have faced similar cases.
Broader context
Snap hasn’t responded publicly yet. This lawsuit highlights a key legal question in the AI industry:
Can companies use public videos and other copyrighted works to train AI without permission?a
Could using datasets like HD-VILA-100M commercially, against their terms, be considered infringement? These points will likely be central in court.

Google to Get EU Instructions on Sharing of Search Data, Android AI Tools

The European Commission has started formal steps to tell Google to share specific data and services. This is part of the EU’s Digital Markets Act (DMA). This new set of rules aims to reduce anti-competitive behaviour by major digital platforms.
Key points :
The EU's focus is on two main areas:
Interoperability for AI and Android tools: The Commission asks Google to clarify how third-party developers and AI services can access Android features. These features are now used by its own services, like Gemini.
Online search data sharing: The EU will create rules for how Google shares anonymised search data. This includes rankings and query patterns with other search engines and AI services. This will happen on fair, reasonable, and non-discriminatory (FRAND) terms.
These steps are part of ongoing discussions with Google. They are not enforcement actions or findings of a violation. They help Google meet its legal duties under the DMA and prevent unfair competition. The Commission plans to complete the proceedings in around six months. Preliminary measures will be announced soon.
Why this matters
The DMA has been in place since early 2024. It gives the EU strong power to make digital gatekeepers, like Google, share important data and features with competitors.
Equal access to AI tools and data could enhance competition and innovation in Europe’s AI and search markets.
Google is worried that a stricter view of these rules could harm user privacy, security, or innovation. They noted that Android is already “open by design.””

Anthropic selected to build government AI assistant pilot

Anthropic, the startup behind the Claude AI models, has been chosen by the UK government. They will build and test an AI assistant for public services. This aims to modernise how citizens use government digital services.
Key points :
The project works with the UK’s Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT). It aims to embed advanced generative AI into the public sector.
The first use case will focus on employment support. This means helping people find jobs, get training, learn about benefits, and use government services.
Pilot Details
The AI assistant will use Anthropic’s Claude models. It aims to provide more than just basic chat. It will offer personalised guidance and maintain context through ongoing interactions.
This comes after a Memorandum of Understanding signed in February 2025 by Anthropic and UK officials. The goal is to speed up practical use rather than just research.
Anthropic engineers will collaborate with UK civil service teams. They will help develop government capabilities to manage and scale AI tools responsibly.
Safety and Data Controls
The partnership prioritises safety. Users will control their data and have clear opt-out options. They will also have protections under UK data-privacy laws while using the assistant.
